Tall sliding fences matter more than people realize. They let you stand crown molding vertically, often handling 7-1/2 inches nested. Without that clearance, you’re making multiple angled cuts and hoping they line up.

Miter ranges around 50-60 degrees and bevels to 45-49 degrees set your compound cut limits. Some saws use clever belt-drive designs to squeeze extra vertical depth. Check these specs before you buy, or you’ll outgrow your saw fast.

Dust Collection Features

Few things ruin a shop session faster than a face full of sawdust and that fine layer of grit coating every surface. That is why I always prioritize dust collection when testing miter saws.

Most models brag about percentages, claiming they capture over 75% of dust. I take those numbers with a grain of salt: real-world performance depends heavily on the dust chute design and how well the blade guard aligns with the collection port. A misaligned port means you are still vacuuming the floor.

Integrated bags work in a pinch, but I vastly prefer saws with vacuum compatibility, especially standard hose fittings. Easy-access ports make a huge difference; I have wrestled with adapters that fight back, and it is not fun.

For serious shop time, look for inline systems or dedicated vac ports. Your lungs (and your cleanup routine) will thank you.
